“Before, if you messed up, you were just going to run,” guard Derrick Morse said. “Some guys can run until the cows come home.

“Now, you’re not going to run, you’re just going to move down the depth chart. I think a lot of guys are maturing because of this. Hopefully, it won’t be an issue anymore.”

It’s part of Shannon’s plan, one that includes removing the names from the backs of game jerseys, to help restore a program that has competed below the standards expected at the University of Miami the past two years. It included a disappointing 9-3 finish in 2005 and an embarrassing 7-6 season last year that featured losses to Georgia Tech, Maryland and Virginia.
